There’s another lesson in there too, from the “connector’s” perspective. I’ve helped out many people in my network by referring business to them. I thought I was helping – they resented it. Turns out, they hated their jobs, and more clients just meant they were less likely to be able to bail on their current profession (lot of lawyers, actually – a trend for sure). Instead, I’ve started asking people what they really want to be doing – 5 or 10 years out, and then I try to connect them to resources and people who can help them pursue those goals.
