Good News

There is so much good news in the world. Good news is uplifting, inspirational and a great way to stay positive.

The good news in this section is mostly about people — everyday heroes — changing the world with their random acts of kindness, good deeds and a commitment to helping others.

Good news makes us happier, as it reminds us to focus on the positive. Good news also serves as examples of how we can strive to make a difference.

I don’t think the media focuses on good news enough, which was part of the inspiration behind my blog. So there’s plenty of good news for you here…

Teenage entrepreneurs develop life-changing device for wheelchair users

Written by Brad Aronson 2,721 Shares

Stephen Campbell’s grandmother was a wheelchair user. Stephen noticed that people in wheelchairs often back their wheelchairs into things causing embarrassment and damage. Plus, if you have a back injury, backing into something can be excruciating.

Stephen asked, “If cars can have backup notification systems, why can’t wheelchairs?”

Stephen and his business partners (Miranda Keeler, Aaron Seidman, Deepak Iyer and Kate Evanko) decided to do more than just ask the question.

Our neighbors noticed that we had a lot going on and could use a distraction.

So our neighbors put this bag in our mailbox.

Act of Kindess

A small act of kindness (like a little gift) at the time you need it can make a huge difference. And, our neighbor’s gesture did make a huge difference.

“Everybody can be great…because anybody can serve,” Martin Luther King, Jr. said. “You don’t have to have a college degree to serve. You don’t have to make your subject and verb agree to serve. You only need a heart full of grace. A soul generated by love.”

As King said, “everybody can be great.”We should never doubt that one person, following her heart and willing to make a difference can make a difference. And, often it’s the simple things and the small things that we do in our everyday lives that

Amazing kids feed thousands of homeless – their inspiring story and how they got started

Written by Brad Aronson 3,262 Shares

A group of Washington D.C. high school students participated in a service project to collect and distribute coats to people who needed them. What I love is that these amazing kids did more than distribute coats.

The high schoolers wrote encouraging notes and put them inside the pockets as a surprise for recipients. Those notes made people smile and feel special – that was as important as handing out the coats.

Josh Kennedy-Noce and D’Mani Harrison-Porter were two of the teenagers running this project. How they got started goes back to the summer Josh and ...

True Meaning of Christmas

In our family we have a special way of transitioning the kids from receiving from Santa, to becoming Santa. This way, the Santa construct is not a lie that gets discovered, but an unfolding series of good deeds and Christmas spirit.

Grandparent on a mission changes lives of over 950 families

Most people’s dads wouldn’t scare me. Carl was different. He was the dad with muscles. He was the guy who skated around town on roller blades before they were popular. He got into fights during town soccer games.

Carl Blum scared the crap out of me.

When I was 19-years-old I dated his daughter, Hester. I remember going to pick Hester up at her house for the first time. Carl answered the door and smiled.

Carl put his arm around me. He didn’t put his arm around me the way a loving grandparent does, but ...

These Philadelphia High School Students Shatter Expectations — Inspiring Graduation

Written by Brad Aronson 2,589 Shares

What was it exactly that moved me so emotionally at this ceremony?

Earlier this month I attended a high school graduation. It wasn’t my son’s graduation. Thankfully, we have 13 more years to prepare for that event. This was a commencement at Girard College. A celebration of 39 high school students who beat the odds.

If you’re unfamiliar with Girard College, it’s a tuition-free boarding school established in 1848 to serve orphans and at-risk children from 1st grade on through high school. Most of the students are from areas of Philadelphia where it’s assumed that ...

Kindness — Hidden Camera Ad Warms Heart

Written by Brad Aronson 518 Shares

I absolutely loved this video.

It is a hidden camera ad, where a kid without a jacket is cold at a bus stop in Norway. The majority of passersby at the bus stopped took the time to help.

The point of the ad from SOS Children’s Villages Norway is to raise awareness of the children suffering in Syria. They ask, “Will you lend a hand?”

You can see the translation in English by clicking the “CC”. Personally, I liked it better without the translation.

“Serving those who serve us is both an expression of thanks from a grateful nation and a fitting tribute to our military heroes who inspire us to a cause greater than ourselves,” said Carolyn Blashek.

I think Blashek, the founder of Operation Gratitude, accurately summed up the feeling of the founders and volunteers with each of the amazing nonprofits below.
